Acid Reflux And What It Is Not
What exactly is acid reflux? Is it a new disease that we are only just learning about? Or, is it just a new name for a condition that has been around for years? When you think about acid reflux, you might not realize that it is a condition that used to be called heartburn. It is a slow burning sensation that can travel from your stomach all the way up to your mouth-a very uncomfortable feeling. If you have ever experienced this, you know all about the discomfort that it causes.
Just what can be done to stop acid reflux? You can try any number of different ways and these vary from taking over the counter medication, to home remedies (passed down from grandparents), to seeing a medical professional for help. Everything will really depend upon how bad your acid reflux disease is-do you have it all the time or only occasionally? Do you find the episodes debilitating or just annoying? If you are like all of us, you will first try an over the counter medication to see if it alleviates the symptoms. You might even self-medicate for months if not years because you just do not want to go to the doctor's office. While trying over the counter medications is acceptable at first, if your condition continues for a longer period of time or becomes more severe, it might be time to see your doctor. Your doctor can run several medical tests that will determine whether or not you have acid reflux or another condition. Once a diagnosis is made, he can begin a proper medical regiment to help you control and possibility eliminate acid reflux. Now you are probably thinking that you will just be given a pill and sent away with the knowledge that you are better. Unfortunately, this is not how acid reflux disease works. If you have acid reflux disease, you will learn that it is an ongoing condition that will require a change in diet and taking medication. Great, another change in diet!
